NEBOSH - National Diploma for Occupational Health & Safety Management Professionals

The NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health & Safety Management Professionals is specifically targeted at health and safety professionals or those that wish to become practicing health and safety practitioners. The NEBOSH National Diploma is the flagship of all the NEBOSH courses and builds on the learning attained from taking and passing a NEBOSH General Certificate course (at National level).

This qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of IOSH and is a step to becoming a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). The qualification is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM).

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is the suggested foundation qualification for the NEBOSH National Diploma Course, although it is not essential to have already completed a health and safety qualification. Many assessors do however, insist upon candidates having prior knowledge and experience necessary to undertake the Diploma course, with individual applicants being assessed on a case-by-case basis.

NEBOSH National Diploma Course Detail

The NEBOSH National Diploma divides in three units. Assessment is through examinations and continual assessment.

Unit ND1: Know – Workplace Health and Safety Principles

• Principles of health and safety management
• Loss causation and incident investigation
• Identifying hazards, assessing and evaluating risk
• Risk control and emergency planning
• Organisational factors
• Human factors
• Principles of health and safety law
• Criminal law
• Civil law
• Measuring health and safety performance

Unit ND2: Do – Controlling Workplace Health Issues 

• General aspects of occupational health and hygiene, including equality mental health and well being.
• Principles of Toxicology and Epidemiology
• Chemical Agents – Evaluating Risk
• Hazardous Substances – Preventative and Protective Measures
• Hazardous Substances – Monitoring and Maintenance of Control Measures
• Biological Agents
• Physical Agents (1) – Noise and Vibration
• Physical Agents (2) – Radiation and Thermal environment
• Psychosocial Agents
• Ergonomic Agents

Unit ND3: Do – Controlling Workplace Safety Issues

• General workplace issues
• Confined spaces
• Principles of fire and explosion
• Workplace fire precautions
• The storage, handling and processing of dangerous substances
• Work equipment
• Machinery safety
• Mechanical handling
• Electrical safety
• Safety in construction and demolition

Assessment

• Unit ND1 is assessed by assignment with some workplace based activities.
• Units ND2 and ND3 are assessed by case study.
