It is essential that Legionella testing is carried out correctly in water systems such as water treatment plants, cooling systems, hot and cold water systems and spa pools because the Legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaires' disease in humans, which is a severe respiratory illness that can last a lifetime once an individual is infected. Legionella bacteria are naturally present in water, but they can multiply to dangerous levels in certain conditions, particularly in warm water systems.
Inadequate management of Legionella testing and/or the absence of legionella risk management programs, lack of training and poor communication are all contributory factors in outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease. As such, individuals in roles such as water system operators, facility managers, health and safety professionals and environmental health officers all need to be trained and competent in assessing legionella risks and implementing control measures.
