EU food hygiene legislation (the Food Hygiene Regulations 2006) has applied throughout the UK since 1 January 2006, although now updated to the current Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013. As it stands, articles of (EC) 178/2002 and (EC) 852/2004 have been retained into GB (Great Britain) law since the withdrawal of the UK from the EU in January 2021.
These Regulations focus on what is necessary for public health protection and cover aspects such as documented food safety management systems, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point principles (HACCP).
Food law is overseen by The Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the UK, which sets and monitors standards and audits local authorities' activities to ensure enforcement arrangements are proportionate, consistent and transparent.
