First Aid - Paediatric

As of March 2015, all new nursery and pre-school staff with a childcare level two or three qualification are required by law to undertake Paediatric First Aid training. Paediatric First Aid training courses are also suitable for those who are responsible for childcare within the home, such as a childminder or a parent/relative.

Paediatric First Aid Course Detail

There are a wide range of paediatric first aid courses in this category, of differing lengths and topics depending on what a delegate needs to learn.

• The Emergency Paediatric First Aid training course – this is a one day first aid course that focuses on giving delegates the knowledge and confidence to deal with an emergency involving a child and typically covers; basic life support, choking, asthma, bleeding, burns/scalds, meningitis, anaphylaxis and unconsciousness.
• The Paediatric First Aid training course – a two-day course that was created in conjunction with the National Childminders Association and consists of twelve hours of training to a national standard.

The course is specifically aimed at those who work with children and can even be undertaken as evidence towards an NVQ in Child Care and Education.  The course covers the same content as the one-day Emergency First Aid training course but also covers heart conditions, seizures, head injuries, sprains/fractures, CPR and poisoning. The course also covers accident reporting, the role of the first aider, casualty action plans and primary surveys which is suitable for those who are responsible for childcare within their place of employment.

• Both of the above courses will be assessed both throughout the day and by a multiple-choice test at the end. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a Paediatric First Aid certificate. The certificate’s period of validity can vary depending on the accreditation of the course but is generally valid for three years.
• The Outdoor Paediatric First Aid Course – This is a niche course aimed at those who work with children in an outdoor setting, such as forest school leaders, sports coaches and nursery teachers. Course content is similar to the Paediatric First Aid course and how to deal with these in the outdoor environment. Successful candidates will receive both the Level 3 Paediatric First Aid Certificate and the ‘Outdoor First Aid’ course certificate, both valid for 3 years.
• The Administration of Medicines in Schools Course – this is a half day course designed to teach staff working in the education, childcare and early years sectors and similar environments to safely administer medicine/assist children in taking their medicine. The course is delivered by a Registered Nurse who will hold adult teaching qualifications and have hands on practical experience.

These First Aid courses include the following elements:

• Giving emergency first aid to a child
• Paediatric resuscitation
• Dealing with a choking child
• Treatment of bleeding
• Treatment for various types of shock
• Managing an unconscious infant and child
• Managing a child in an asthma emergency
• Basic life support (CPR)
• Burns
• Anaphylaxis
• Head injuries
• Broken bones

Course Delivery

Different courses last for different durations (see above) but all will be delivered at a trainer’s location, which are typically available nationwide across the UK.

If a large number of people in one organisation, such as a nursery or school, need to attend the same training course then there may be a business case to arrange for a qualified trainer to attend on site instead.

Please note that all candidates must be able to undertake practical activities such as lying down and kneeling to simulate a potential emergency situation
