This category includes both first aid courses for Appointed Persons as well as Emergency First Aid courses, delivered nationwide across the UK.
Delegates can either attend open courses for these categories, or if there is a requirement for more than one delegate to be trained there may be a justification for arranging an in-company course. It is also possible to sit an e-learning course in this category, where delegates sit the course remotely in their own time. This is perfect for those who cannot attend a course at a set location or at a set time.
The decision as to whether to have a qualified First Aider is based largely on the organisation’s risk assessment. If this only indicates the need for one or more Appointed Persons, it might be decided that trained first aiders are not needed within the workplace. In this case, it is a good idea for those with defined First Aid responsibilities to attend an Appointed Person’s course.
In situations where an organisation’s risk assessment indicates that one or more trained first aiders are required, then training these people to be responsible for Emergency First Aid Cover is the best option. In this instance an Emergency First Aid at Work course would be appropriate (EFAW).
The HSE guidelines given in their Approved Code of Practice suggest the following cover (this should be considered as a rough guide rather than a definitive rule and more details can found in the HSE ACOP):
For Low Hazard Environments:
For High Hazard Environments:
