CPCS (A04) - Tower Crane Training & Testing

The CPCS Tower Crane training course (A04) is aimed at those operating a Tower Crane in a construction environment. 

There are three endorsements for the CPCS Tower Crane course which are:

A: Trolley Jib – Cab Controlled
B: Luffing Jib – Cab Controlled
C: Trolley Jib – Remote Controlled*

*The A04C category has superseded the A63A & B Pedestrian Operated Tower Crane course which was available previously.

The Foundation course with Cab Controlled endorsements (A04A and A04B) typically lasts 10 days and covers 9 days of both practical and theory training, with a final day to test both practical technical knowledge and theory. The Foundation course for A04C (Trolley Jib – Remote Controlled) typically lasts 5 days. 

Successful candidates will receive the CPCS Red Card (Trained Operator) for the A04 Tower Crane training category, which is valid for 2 years.

Please note that for all CPCS tests, candidates must have successfully completed the CSCS Health, Safety and Environment touchscreen test for Operatives within the past two years.

CPCS Course Detail

This crane training course provides thorough training to operators of Tower Cranes, covering both practical and theory elements. Operators will be able to safely carry out their role upon successful completion.

This CPCS course includes the following elements:

  • Safe, productive tower crane operation
  • Understanding and recognising the signals for tower crane operations
  • Routine maintenance and minor adjustments. This includes how to understand the capabilities of the equipment
  • How to secure, check and maintain counterweights
  • Relevant legislation, statutory regulations and the operator’s own legal responsibilities in respect to lifting equipment plus any relevant safety precautions
  • How to decide on safe loads, understanding safe load indicators and overload warning devices
  • How to gauge the effect of shock loading on the crane

The CPCS practical test for the Tower Crane must be completed within ninety minutes and will consist of the candidate using the machine to complete a variety of activities and manoeuvres including lifting and placing loads.

The CPCS theory test is a verbal questions and answer session which will take approximately an hour to complete.

Course Delivery

Please note that this CPCS category is usually deemed to be ‘Off Centre’ so the course is taken as a dedicated course at your own site but will from time to time have open course dates.
