Confined Spaces Training Courses

Working in confined spaces can be high risk. A number of people are killed or seriously injured in the UK each year when working in confined spaces. Unfortunately, those that try to rescue them are often also at risk due to poor training.

Training courses under this category relate to the very specific Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 which regulate work within confined spaces.

These regulations place clear duties on employers in respect of work carried out by employees in confined spaces; work within a confined space must be carried out only in accordance with a safe system of work and it is important that anyone working in or likely to work in a confined space is properly trained.

Confined Spaces Training Courses Available

There are a range of courses available that address working on confined spaces, ranging from the foundation Confined Space Awareness course to the more comprehensive Entry into Confined Spaces with Escape, Full Working Breathing Apparatus, Basic First Aid, CPR & Resuscitation course.

The are three popular courses associated with increasing levels of risk, namely:

• Entry into Confined Spaces with Escape BA (typically a 1-day course)
• Entry into Confined Spaces with Escape & Full Working Breathing Apparatus (typically a 2-day course)
• Entry into Confined Spaces with Escape, Full Working Breathing Apparatus, Basic First Aid, CPR & Resuscitation (typically a 3-day course)

There are some specialised courses, including specific courses associated with the use or airline breathing apparatus and vertical entry, as well as refresher courses.

There is also a group of specific City and Guilds confined space courses  (C&G 6150 and C&G 6160). These courses are designed to address the risks associated with different types of confined spaces with low, medium and high-risk classifications, and although there are both water and non-water courses, the most popular City & Guilds courses are those for the water industry. These awards are fully supported by all water companies in the UK. The C&G 6150 water course types include:

• City & Guilds Water UK Working in Low Risk Confined Spaces (6150-01)
• City & Guilds Water UK Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces (6150-02)
• City & Guilds Water UK Working in High Risk Confined Spaces: Water (6150-03)
• City & Guilds Emergency Rescue & Recovery of Casualities from Confined Spaces Water UK (6150-5)

The other C&G 6160 options include:

• City & Guilds Working in Low Risk Confined Spaces (6160-01)
• City & Guilds Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces (6160-02)
• City & Guilds Working in High Risk Confined Spaces (6160-03)
• City & Guilds Working as a Member of a Rescue and Recovery Team in Confined Spaces (6160-08)

Course Delivery

Confined Space training courses are delivered throughout the UK, either as open public courses or as dedicated courses on customers’ own sites with mobile confined spaces units available nationwide. 

Course duration will vary based on the course chosen and the level of expertise the course is aimed at. The duration of courses typically increases proportionally with the level of risk.
