CCNSG – ECITB Safety Passport Courses

The Client Contractor National Safety Group (CCNSG) has developed a Safety Passport Scheme for site work to help site personnel and contractors’ personnel to work more safely with lower risk to themselves and others. CCNSG courses are administered by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), therefore, the CCNSG Safety Passport is also sometimes known as the “ECITB Safety Passport”.

CCNSG courses relate to site safety, ensuring that those going to work on a site have a basic knowledge of health and safety, after an appropriate site induction. The CCNSG safety passport is the agreed site safety training qualification needed for access to process plant sites in the UK.

Which CCNSG Course?

The ECITB administer the CCNSG Safety Passport scheme via a network of approved training providers.

There are three CCNSG training courses available that make up the CCNSG Safety Passport Scheme:

National CCNSG Course

The National CCNSG Course is a two-day course for basic site safety.

Content included within the National CCNSG Course includes:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act and safe behaviours at work.
  • Risk assessments, including fire safety, hazardous substances and asbestos, and the hierarchy of control.
  • Manual handling.
  • Provision and use of work equipment regulations.
  • Hand arm vibration syndrome.
  • Working in confined spaces and working at height.
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations.
  • Site transport.
  • Signage.
  • Excavations, procedures and practices.
  • Electric/Isolation.
  • Environmental issues, including noise.
  • Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences.

To gain the CCNSG National Course award for the CCNSG Safety Passport, candidates are required to successfully complete a multiple-choice test paper at the end of the course. Successful candidates will hold this award for three years.

CCNSG Renewal Course

The CCNSG Renewal Course is a one-day refresher course for those who have already passed the CCNSG National Course.

Candidates are required to sit the CCNSG Renewal Course prior to the expiry of their current Safety Passport. If the CCNSG Renewal Course is not taken before the Safety Passport expires, candidates will have to re-sit the full two-day CCNSG National Course.

CCNSG Leading a Team Safely Training Course

The CCNSG Leading a Team Safely training course was introduced in 2014 to replace the CCNSG Supervising Safety course. This is a one-day CCNSG training course suitable for all who are working in a supervisory role and all delegates must also hold a current and valid CCNSG Safety passport.

This CCNSG course focuses on how to lead a small team safely, communication skills and achieving safe outcomes. Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a CCNSG Leading a Team Safely card which is valid for three years and must be renewed within three months of expiry.
