Course Aim
This two-day course is intended for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities. It provides supervisors with an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote health and safety to supervise effectively.
Who Should Attend
This course is an ideal foundation for obtaining a basic understanding of health and
safety duties and responsibilities for supervisors and junior management. The course is also suitable for managers responsible for smaller projects and property developers who have had little or no health & safety training.
Objectives
The course aims to ensure that all those given supervisory responsibilities understand:
- why they are carrying out their identified duties
- what is expected of them and to ensure that they contribute to the safety of the workplace.
At the end of the course Delegates will be able to:
- understand the problems of the industry
- have an understanding of how health and safety law is structured and how it
- applies to supervisors
- identify how their supervisory role fits in with the management structure in
- controlling the site safely
- carry out risk assessments and understand the need for method statements
- carry out effective site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
- be able to monitor site activities effectively
- understand the importance of timely intervention when bad practice is identified.

The course comprises 13 core modules delivered over 2 days.
- The role of the supervisor/manager
- Overview of health & safety legislation
- CDM Regulations 2007
- Health & safety management systems
- Safe systems of work (including risk assessments and method statements)
- Occupational health
- Fire prevention/control and other emergencies
- Hazardous substances (COSHH)
- Working at height
- Personal protective equipment
- Manual handling
- Accidents and first aid
- Intervention skills and behaviour
Examination Information
Delegates who attend will be required to undertake a multiple choice test to confirm their understanding of the subjects covered.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a CITB accredited certificate which is valid for five years.
Please note that as of the 1st January 2016, CITB Site Management / Site Supervisor certificates will no longer have a six month grace period and candidates will need to attend a Refresher course before the expiry date of their original certificate.
