This two day refresher course is for delegates who have previously passed the full five-day (SMSTS) course and can provide proof of attendance. It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact on the workplace.
SMSTS certification expires after 5 years

Please note that as of the 1st January 2016, CITB Site Management / Site Supervisor certificates will no longer have a six month grace period and candidates will need to attend a Refresher course before the expiry date of their original certificate.
Aims and Objectives
To assist delegates who already hold the SMSTS certificate to:
- Improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues; and
- Identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation, and new working practices
At the conclusion of the training, delegates will be:
- Aware of, and able to implement all updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a manager
- Aware of and able to implement new guidance and industry best practice
- More aware of their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.
Programme
Day One:
- Introduction and course objectives
- HSE Targets and present focus.
- Industry Best Practice and new legislation.
- Work related stress – recognition, causes and information and good management practice.
- Risk assessment, employment of young people, The Working Time Directive, employing and working with non English speaking personnel.
- The Construction (Design & Management) Regulations, duties, responsibilities and new guidance.
- Review of Day One (selection of specific topics to meet course needs)
Day Two:
- Fire on construction sites, fire safety plans, fire risk assessments and fire prevention.
- Environmental aspects of construction, the control of waste and its disposal, environmental policies.
- Recent Health and Safety prosecutions, the law and you.
- Practical team exercise as selected on day one.
- Stress, time management, leadership, communication.
- Examination
- Results, feedback and course review.
- Clear video and audio quality, to clearly see and hear the course content from your trainer.

- Must be able to have a two-way communication, to ensure that courses remain interactive for you to ask questions.
- Must have a webcam, to provide evidence of identity and always be visible throughout the duration.
- A microphone is needed, to participate during the course and answer all examination questions.
- For all courses you will need at least two of the following so that you can be visible whilst completing the online end course exam – smart phone, laptop, tablet/iPad, desktop computer.
