Introduction


This accreditation aims to give learners the knowledge, skills and understanding in the safety checks required on poling vehicles. It introduces learners to the hazards and potential risks involved with pole vehicles and
to comply with health and safety legislation. The target audience is aimed at those working on the telecoms network including suppliers and contractors.


Performance Objectives


- Use suitable personal and vehicle protective equipment throughout all vehicle safety checks
- Authenticate the documentation relating to the vehicle
- Ensure your operational checks and tests on the vehicle identify any faults and non-compliance with statutory and organisational requirements accurately
- Carry out vehicle safety checks and servicing activities in the specified sequence
- Confirm all systems and components inspected function correctly following the manufacturer's specifications
- Carry out pre-start checks and adjustments in accordance with standard procedures
- Report any instances where the checks and servicing activities cannot be fully met or where there are identified defects outside the planned schedule
- Ensure your records are accurate, complete and passed to the relevant person(s) promptly in the format required (this includes all vehicle related paperwork)
- Confirm that equipment has been calibrated to meet manufacturers' and legal requirements, where necessary
- Make suitable recommendations for future action based upon the results of your safety checks
- Clean the work area and safely dispose of waste materials in accordance with safe working practices and approved procedures


Learning Outcomes


1. Know how to carry out poling vehicle safety checks in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation and company policies
2. Be able to undertake pre- and post-operational poling vehicle safety checks
3. Know how to carry out operator checks to ensure vehicle mounted cranes used for erecting wooden poles is safe to use.
4. Know the banksman (signaller) signs to direct the driver’s operations.
5. Be able to carry out Banksman (signaller) signs to direct a driver in charge of a vehicle


Qualification Structure


To achieve this accreditation learners must attain one mandatory unit.
