NRSWA Unit 1 (LA) - Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus

Objective: 

This course is designed to make candidates aware of the dangers involved in excavating on public highway and private land and train them to detect and avoid most buried apparatus. 

Who Should Attend: 

Everyone connected with excavation wil benefit from this course, including: Designers and planners, safety personnel, site management and all operational staff including machine operators

Course Contents: 

- Responsibility under Health & Safety at Work Act
- Responsibility to work to HSG47 (the avoidance of underground services)
- Obtaining and understanding utilities drawings
- Observation of surface features - manholes, lamp standard etc
- Use of locating CAT and Genny or similar (Cat C4+) 
- Careful excavation
- Practical assessment

Training Method:

In classroom followed by practical assessment and a 20 question multiple choice test
Candidates will be required to complete both theory and practical assessments and will be observed

Certification: 

Upon successful completion, delegates will be awarded with a certificate from the relative awarding body followed by a plastic ID Card issued by the street works qualifications register (SWQR). Accreditations are valid for 5 years

Requirements: 

Because of the nature of the course, delegates will need the following PPE

- Safety helmet
- High Vis clothing
- Gloves
- Safety boots
- Waterproof clothing
