NRSWA Training (New Roads and Street Works) is necessary for any person who may or will be involved in working on or adjacent to the public highways as defined by regulations for the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.
This course involves the procedures and guidelines for monitoring the work on roads and highways and of the operatives. The training and qualifications are aimed at those who are either employed or contracted to local authorities, utilities companies or contractors and are required to carry out the monitoring of work on roads, highways or on footpaths. It is essential that those who monitor the work on public highways or even adjacent to them should take the relevant training courses and achieve the required level of competence. It is through our range of qualified training and competence-based assessment that this course is achieved.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course our delegates will be aware of: -
• Individual unit training and assessment process for a Streetworks Supervisor.
• Health and Safety legislation, regulations, ACOP and their obligations.
• Monitoring safe working practices and methods.
• Understanding Risk Assessments
• Reference documentation used within the Highways Industry.
In addition, they will be able to: -
• Monitor Streetworks to the standards as set down in the Act.
• Monitor the safe use of hand and power tools for the purpose of excavation and reinstatement.
• Monitor excavation work
• Monitor the safety, use, backfill and reinstatement of cold lay
• Monitor the safety, use, backfill and reinstatement of paving, block and concrete
• Monitor the safe set up Portable Traffic Signal Systems including safe use of stop/go boards, setting out appropriate signage and guarding for work area.
• Read and understand site plans.
• Monitor the use of locating equipment (Cat & Genny) for the purpose of detecting underground apparatus/services.
• Monitor the setting up of a site to protect workers and members of the public.

The NRSWA Course for Supervisors will cover the following units: -

LA - Location & avoidance of underground services
Unit S1 - Monitoring Signing, Lighting & Guarding
Unit S2 - Monitoring Excavation in the highway. Specifications, techniques, road types, materials
Unit S3 - Monitoring Reinstatement & compaction of backfill materials
Unit S4 - Monitoring Reinstatement of non-bituminous sub-base & road-base materials
Unit S5 - Monitoring Laying practices and reinstatement of hot & cold lay bituminous materials.

Assessment
Assessment of the NRSWA course is carried out as follows: -
• Each unit of competence is assessed by written & oral questioning.
• Each unit of competence is assessed practically by observation.
• Some units require the delegates to produce drawings.
• Some units require the delegates to carry out risk assessments.
End Tests for each unit conducted on Tablets
Who Should Attend?
This NRSWA Training course is designed for NRSWA supervisors who will monitor the work on the roadways and highways. This includes monitoring excavation, backfill and reinstatement of materials during street works.
Mandatory Requirements
You are required to bring 2 official passport photographs for your card application. These cannot be home printed as the criteria is strict.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required. High visibility vest or jacket, Steel toe capped boots, Hard Hat Gloves for operatives only).
Clean footwear for the classroom sessions.
