NRSWA - New Roads & Street Works Training - Operative Units 1-6 & 9 (LA, O1-O5, & O8)

Course Overview

Courses are designed for operatives who physically carry out the work on the roadways and
highways. Courses vary in their combination of the units to provide delegates with their skills and
knowledge to perform duties in accordance with the Street Works Act 1991.

The New Roads and Street Works Act requires that anyone who executes, works for, or on behalf of
a utility company, is qualified for the activities being carried out.

Any street works site must have at least one qualified operative on site at all times during works, and
the site must have a qualified supervisor appointed to the site who can oversee the works. The
supervisor need not be on site at all times, but must be able to adequately carry out the role. The
supervisor qualification does not replace or overrule the operative qualification and one person
cannot cover both roles at the same time.

The courses are arranged for delegates to become qualified in combinations of operative of
supervisor units. For your guidance, operatives are manually carrying out the work, supervisors are
trained to make sure that the operatives are doing the work correctly and safely.

Course Agenda

The City & Guilds NRSWA (6157-01) Course will cover the following topics: -
• 001 - Location & avoidance of underground apparatus
• 002 - Signing, lighting & guarding
• 003 - Excavation in the highway
• 004 - Reinstatement & compaction of backfill materials
• 005 - Reinstatement of sub base & road in non-bituminous materials
• 006 - Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials
• 008 - Reinstatement of concrete slabs
• 009 - Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways

Certificates

Once the delegate has successfully completed the course and assessment, the results will be
submitted to the awarding body and certification will be issued to the delegate in due course.

Pre-Requisites

Some level of experience within the construction / civil engineering sectors is a pre-requisite
for acceptance on to this roads and street works course. If you are unsure whether your
