NRSWA - New Roads & Street Works Training - Operative Units 1-6 & 9 (LA, O1-O5, & O8)

Course Syllabus

The course will cover the following:

- Interpretation of plans
- Identification of apparatus
- Implications of damage to apparatus
- Use of pipe and cable location equipment
- Setting out of signs, cones, lamps and barriers in accordance with Department of Transport requirements.
- Erection of temporary traffic signals
- Excavation techniques
- Support to utilities apparatus
- Selection and storage of excavated materials for re-use
- Placing and compaction of backfill and sub base materials
- Laying and compaction of cold lay bituminous materials
- Disposal of surplus material
- Breaking up and removal of existing materials above formation layer
- Cleaning and preparation of formation layer
- Laying and compaction of bedding materials
- Laying of modular paving to match existing line, level and bond
- Laying and compaction of concrete footways to match existing
- Safe working practice

Course content

Unit 1 - Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus
Unit 2 - Signing, lighting and guarding
Unit 3 - Excavation in the highway
Unit 4 - Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
Unit 5 - Reinstatement of sub-base and roadbase in non-bituminous materials
Unit 6 - Reinstatement in cold-lay bituminous materials
Unit 7 - Reinstatement in hot-lay bituminous materials
Unit 9 - Reinstatement of modular surfaces

Who should attend?

All operatives who are involved in working on the highway or have responsibility for operatives working on the highway.
This qualification is nationally recognised and certificated by the City and Guilds, SQA and CABWI.

On successful completion candidates will be entered on to the Street Works register and will be issued a photo card ID as proof of competence.

The certificate is valid for 5 years and the candidate will receive a SWQR card. To requalify candidates will have to do the NRSWA re-assessment course prior to their card expiring.
