NEBOSH National General Certificate qualification gives a good foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and staff with health and safety among their day to day responsibilities.
This qualification is widely taken as a first step towards a career in health and safety and is accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technical Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH).

Anyone who wishes to acquire a formal qualification and extend their knowledge and skill in applying successful health and safety practice. This certificate is particularly useful to anyone who wants to begin a career in occupational health and safety. Many organisations are increasingly using this qualification as the competence level of specific levels of management.
Course Contents:
- Organising for health and safety culture, including policy. - Health and safety culture. - Risk assessment. - Principles of control. - Movement of people and vehicles. - Manual and mechanical handling. - Work place safety and work equipment. - First-aid and occupational health. - Electrical hazards and control. - Fire safety. - Chemical and biological hazards and control. - Construction activities. - Accident reporting, recording and investigation. - Human factors. - Health and safety law.

Course Objectives:
- Identify the common hazards and unsafe practices likely to be found in the workplace, and know the appropriate remedial actions to be taken. Monitor and audit management policies and procedures. - Interpret health and safety legislation and guidance. - Assist in the preparation and review of safety policies. - Use proactive and reactive strategies to prevent or reduce workplace accidents and ill-health. - Organise the work of a safety committee and manage safety representatives. - Undertake appropriate inspections and monitoring techniques.
Assessment:
Units NGC1 and GC2 are each assessed by a two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions and one ‘long-answer’ question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate exam papers are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.
Unit NGC3 is assessed by one two-hour practical examination carried out in the candidate’s own workplace. The assessment must normally be taken within 14 days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed by the programme organiser and externally moderated by NEBOSH. Duration:
Eleven days tuition on a block-release basis ( 2 x 5 days and 1 extra day before the examination date), followed by 1 day for the examination(s). In addition, students are required to complete a practical assignment at a workplace of their choice within 14 days of the examination.
Homework will be issued to delegates during the course, which will be marked by a former NEBOSH examiner to give ongoing guidance and feedback.
