Overview

Mental Health First Aid is our most comprehensive mental health awareness and skills course consisting of tutor-led presentations, discussions and group work activities. The knowledge presented and understanding developed during the course aims to remove the stigma and fear often associated with mental health conditions. Highly interactive, the course includes practical sessions designed to give attendees the experience and confidence to engage in sensitive conversations with a colleague who may be struggling. Mental Health First Aid is an initial response to distress. Delegates will be trained on how to identify signs of deteriorating mental health in a colleague and how to escalate to professional services if required.

Course Content

• Spotting the early signs and symptoms of mental ill health
• Starting a supportive conversation with a colleague
• Listening to the person non-judgmentally
• Assessing the risk of suicide or self-harm
• Encouraging the person to access appropriate professional support or self-help
• Escalation to the appropriate emergency services where necessary
• Maintaining confidentiality as appropriate
• Completing critical incident documents
• Protecting yourself whilst performing the role
