Introduction 


Manual handling is one of the most common causes of musculo-skeletal disorders, specifically back pains, affecting employees of all ages. With these statistics in mind the importance of effective Manual Handling Training cannot be over-emphasised. In some cases by training carefully selected individuals to become Manual Handling Instructors it can be more cost effective to the organisation.

Course Duration 

This course will run over 3 days.

Who Should Attend?

This course is well suited to Safety Managers or Representatives, Human Resource Managers and/or any other personnel wishing to develop their knowledge of manual handling, communication skills and instructional methods. Before attendance delegates must have attended a manual handling course or have experience of correct manual handling techniques.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course delegates will:

- Have a good knowledge of the current issues concerned with manual handling
- Be able to communicate the practical application of manual handling skills
- Be able to set up learning situations in order to demonstrate their knowledge and skill of manual handling principles

Course Programme


Day One

- Moving the load correctly
- Theoretical background and the current issues concerned with manual handling
- The biomechanics of the spine and what can go wrong
- Back pain - the problems and statistics
- Assessing the risk - do we need to lift?
- Principles of moving loads
- Relevant regulations and responsibilities
- Demonstrate and practice a wide range of manual handling techniques and equipment appropriate to work setting

Day Two 

- Manual Handling – Teaching Others
- Basic principles of teaching and learning
- Course members will present a short training session on the subject of Manual Handling
- Self caring strategies for back care
- Feedback will be given to all delegates on the workshops and the tutor will answer any final questions

Day Three 

- Practical workshop
- This day combines the knowledge and skills gained from previous days

Certification and Assessment 

Delegates will be assessed on their input during the practical exercises and a summative assessment at the end of the course.
