Who Should Attend?

This qualification is for learners wishing to apply for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme Green Card to access construction sites in the UK as a non-skilled worker/labourer. 

 

Aim

To provide delegates with knowledge to enable them to pass the online assessment at the end of the programme and gain the qualification.

 

Objectives

By the end of the programme delegates will have a better awareness of:

·        The principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work

·        The importance of safe manual handling in the workplace

·        The importance of working safely at height in the workplace

·        The risks to health within a construction environment

·        The importance of working around plant and equipment safely

 

Contents 

·        Know the principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work

o   the purpose of risk assessments and method statements

o   the legal requirements of risk assessments and method statements

o   common causes of work-related fatalities & Injuries

o   the implications of not preventing accidents and ill health at work

o   the meaning of terminology in relation to health and safety at work

o   typical hazards/risks on a construction site

o   the importance of reporting accidents and near misses

o   typical accident reporting procedures

o   who is responsible for making accident reports

 

·        Know the importance of safe manual handling in the workplace

o   the reasons for ensuring safe manual handling in the workplace

o   potential injuries and ill health that may occur from incorrect manual handling

o   the employee’s responsibilities under current legislation and official guidance for:

§  moving and storing materials

§  manual handling

§  mechanical lifting

o   the procedures for safe lifting in accordance with official guidance

o   the importance of using site safety equipment when handling materials and equipment

o   aids available to assist manual handling in the workplace

o   how to apply safe work practices, follow procedures and report problems when carrying out safe manual handling in the workplace

 

·        Know the importance of working safely at height in the workplace

o   the term ‘working at height’

o   the employee’s responsibilities under current legislation and official guidance whilst working at height

o   hazards/risks associated with working at height

o   how hazards/risks associated with working at height can be controlled

o   the regulation that controls the use of suitable equipment for working at height

 

 

 

·        Know risks to health within a construction environment

o   substances hazardous to health under current regulations

o   common risks to health within a construction environment

o   the types of hazards/risks that may occur in the workplace linked with use of drugs and alcohol

o   the importance of the correct storage of combustibles and chemicals on site

o   the importance of personal hygiene within a construction environment

o   the potential hazards/risks to the health of workers exposed to asbestos

o   types of asbestos waste

o   types of personal protective equipment (PPE) used when dealing with hazardous materials

 

·        Know the importance of working around plant and equipment safely

o   ways in which moving machinery can cause injuries

o   hazards/risks relating to the use of plant and equipment

o   the importance of safeguards located near where plant and machinery is being used

o   the importance of keeping a safe distance away from plant/machinery and equipment until clear contact is made with the operator

o   how method statements can assist in ensuring the safety of workers where moving plant is in use

o   ways to eliminate or control hazards/risks relating to working around plant and equipment

o   hazard warning signs and symbols used around the use of plant and equipment
