Audience
Construction, Project Managers and Construction Supervisors.

Objectives
To develop awareness and competence to manage safely and effectively in compliance with both company, policy and construction industry best practice. On the successful completion of Managing Safely in Construction, delegates will:
• Understand the legislation and be able to apply the principles of risk assessment
• Identify workplace hazards, work at height, excavations, confined spaces, electricity, demolition and provision of welfare facilities
• Set reasonable targets and objectives and plan accordingly
• Communicate effectively on health and safety
• Identify and apply appropriate control measures, method statements and permits to work
• Prepare monitoring checklists to undertake reviews in the workplace
• Ensure adequate provision of health and safety training information and instruction
• Identify human factors involved in the causation of accidents and occupational ill health and manage them accordingly
• Be able to investigate accidents and incidents, determine their causes and take appropriate action

Course Structure
The course is arranged into modules and provides an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to contribute to an effective health and safety management system. Topics include:
• Safety management
• Active and reactive monitoring
• Risk assessment and risk control
• Health and safety legislation including CDM
• Hazards on the construction site
• Reviewing and audit

Assessment of the Course
The course material is evaluated by means of a multi-choice assessment paper and a project. Successful completion of the programme results in the award of an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) certificate.

Course Length
The course consists of 4 lecture days including examinations and a practical assessment.
