Course Summary:


The HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF) has been accredited by the regulators of England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Ofqual, Welsh Government and CCEA) and is part of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)

The aim of the First Aid at Work qualification is to enable a candidate to be able to act as a First Aid person to take charge of the first aid arrangements, including both Primary and Secondary Survey, preventing the condition from worsening and promoting recovery. It is ideal for those candidates already working or preparing to work within industry to become a First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

Pre-requisites:

- Candidates must be 16 years of age or above and be physically able to carry out CPR on the floor
 
Candidates must be able to prove their identity using one of the following methods:
- Valid passport (any nationality)
- Signed UK photo card driving licence
- Valid warrant card issued by HM Forces, Police
- Other photographic id card e.g.
- Employee or
Validity of Award: 36 months.

Length of Course: 24 guided learning hours.

Course Information:

The qualification is made up of two mandatory units, which candidates must complete successfully in order to achieve the qualification:

- The role and responsibilities of a first aider
- Being able to assess an incident
- Being able to manage:
- An unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
- An unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
- A casualty with external bleeding
- A casualty who is in shock
- A casualty with a minor injury
- Being able to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking

Effective demonstration of using an automated external defibrillator (AED) as follows:
- Place AED pads correctly
- Follow AED instructions
- Being able to conduct a secondary survey
- Being able to administer first aid to a casualty with:
- Injuries to bones, muscles and joints
- Suspected head and spinal injuries
- Suspected chest injuries
- Burns and scalds
- An eye injury
- Sudden poisoning
- Anaphylaxis
- Suspected major illness

Assessment:

The qualification is assessed is assed via:

Practical demonstration – this is completed throughout the course delivery. This on-going assessment will involve candidates demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.
 
Oral questioning – this is completed via on-going questioning/discussion with candidates on the course. This assessment will require candidates to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in a number of first aid related areas.
