Recent research indicates that up to 50% of all RPE used does not offer the wearer the level of protection assumed and one of the major reasons is that it simply does not fit! Respiratory protection equipment comes in a vast range of sizes, shapes, and models vary from manufactures. However under the regulations respiratory protective equipment (RPE) must be correctly selected and this includes a face piece Fit Test conducted by a competent person.

Our fit tester is trained and competent to the standards required in the HSE guidance note HSE 282/28.

Why Perform a Fit Test?

If you provide respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to your employees then it is essential that you have documented evidence to show the RPE fits the wearer. By subjecting each wearer to a face-fit test you can be sure that your organization is fulfilling the requirements laid out by the regulations.

What Types of Mask require fit Testing?

There are two types of fit test – Qualitative & Quantitative. The type of fit test which should be employed is dependent on the face piece being tested. As a rule, Filter Face Pieces (FFP) & Half Masks can be tested using a Qualitative method. This includes disposable and re-usable types, all other tight fitting face pieces such as full face mask respirators must be tested using a Quantitative test method.

When Should Fit Testing be carried out?

A Fit Test should ideally be carried out in the initial stages of selecting respiratory protective equipment (RPE). However where an untested face piece is already in use, and providing it is in good condition it can also be used to perform the fit test. An employee should not need to be re-tested unless one of the following occurs:

- Your company's policy changes relating to fit testing.
- Your employee undergoes extensive dental treatment.
- You gain or lose weight excessively
- Facial hair growth occurs in which your tight fitting face piece is ineffective and you are now at substantial risk.

Fit testing does not need to be done annually but it is recommended that face piece wearers receive annual training covering the selection, use and maintenance of their mask. When face pieces are issued on an individual basis, it is recommended that they receive an individual assessment on their own face piece.

Pre-Requisites:

Please note that in order for the face fit tests to be successful, the trainee MUST NOT eat, drink or smoke for at least 30 minutes before the test is performed. They must also be clean-shaven as stubble will prevent a good seal and the face fit test will fail.

Certification: Certificate of Attendance valid for 3 years, with optional photo ID Card.
