Course content

  • Name and explain the purpose of principal plant components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use plant equipment checks
  • Outline their role in setting up and rigging equipment
  • Explain the purpose of having work platform certificates
  • Manoeuvre in confined spaces
  • Guide a piling rig to a given location including through areas of limited space
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Explain how rigs and configured for travel
  • Comply with signals and instructions
  • Maintain safe working situations
  • Explain lifting requirements and limitations using a piling rig
  • Assist in shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the de-rigging, loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

Entry requirements

In order to be eligible to undertake CPCS testing, candidates must have achieved the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) touch-screen-test within 2 years.

Good understanding of spoken and written English.

Assessment

A mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises, followed by one day assessment - CPCS technical tests.

Certification

Successful candidates will obtain a CPCS ‘Construction Plant Competence Scheme’ card on completion, if they don’t currently hold a relevant S/NVQ they’ll be issued with a CPCS Red Trained Operator card (2-year validity). During the 2 year lifespan of the card candidates will need to work towards the relevant plant operations NVQ that will enable them to upgrade their Blue Competent Operator card (5 year validity).

The course either has new dates in data loading, or is only run as a dedicated or In Company course.
