Who should attend?
This course is suitable for anybody who will be working in a medium risk environment and includes preparing to work safely, entering and exiting medium risk confined spaces safely, using equipment and tools safely, following procedures and dealing with emergencies.
Course Aims & Objectives
This course is designed to reflect the national occupation standards for a medium risk related confined space environment. It covers both Water and Non-Water industry areas.
Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations or where the operative is working in or near water or where a Confined Space is subject to surface water flooding.
Non-water: This may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.
Course Outline
- Prepare to work safely in medium risk confined spaces including work plan, equipment check, monitoring equipment, authorisation, information, competence, safety zones, communication, checks.
- Enter & exit a medium risk confined space safely including atmospheric conditions, PPE, monitoring equipment, safety inspection on access equipment, procedures, records, resolving problems, unsafe activity, after use checks.
- Work safely & monitor team work to ensure procedures are followed including control access, equipment and tools, PPE, safe working procedures, vigilance, reports & documentations
- Deal with emergency situations including emergency arrangements, emergency procedures, records & reports.
- Understand the principals of working in medium risk confined spaces including Health, Safety and Environmental legislation, hazards, substances and situations, types of places that could become confined, workplace exposure limited and properties, types of emergencies, common causes, roles, injuries and the importance of decontamination procedures
- Understand standard protocols for work in medium risk confined spaces including classification scheme, risk weighting factors, communication methods, lines of communication, procedures, reporting systems
- Understand entry controller duties & responsibilities including pre-entry briefing, key requirements, ventilation systems, vigilance, incidents, documentation
- Understand equipment checks & inspections required including defects, actions, checks, equipment, safety, escape and emergency equipment, ways types of monitoring equipment can malfunction
Certification
Delegates will be required to complete and pass a practical observation and short answer question paper. On successful completion of the course candidates will be issued with a photo ID card and a City & Guilds Certificate which is valid for three years.
