CITB Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme

Overview

The development of this course was an industry led solution supported by CITB, TunnelSkills and the British Tunnelling Society (BTS). From concept through to delivery, contractors, clients and providers have been consulted, often with direct input into development.

It has been developed in conjunction with industry experts to be a pre-requisite for entering any tunnel. This course is for you if you are involved in the tunnel construction industry as a member of the workforce, to help you understand a variety of different health and safety aspects of the industry, the associated working environment and some of the potential hazards you may face working on a tunnelling site.

Aim

To ensure the delegates gain an understanding of:
•how tunnels are constructed, and the operations conducted within the construction phase and their impact on the environment
•the health, safety and occupational health hazards and risks in the tunnelling environment
•legislation and standards relating to tunnelling and procedures to be adhered to in the tunnelling environment, including confined spaces, exclusion zones and emergencies
•risk assessment and risk management
•what is expected of them by way of safe conduct and behaviour whilst working in a tunnelling environment.

This one-day course covers the following topic areas:
• Entry into a tunnel environment
• Surface works and shafts
• Tunnel construction
• Tunnelling plant and equipment
• Control of underground plant during tunnelling operations
• Emergency arrangements
• Occupational Health

The course is delivered through theoretical training either at a CITB approved centre or another suitable classroom venue at your preferred location.

This qualification is assessed through classroom group-based exercises and an individual written multiple choice assessment. The qualification is valid for 3 years.
