This course is designed to provide training in using locating equipment safely and in line with all relevant health and safety legislation. When carrying out any excavation work for utility or other purposes, it is important to ensure that all cables, water and gas pipes are effectively located and avoided. This course enables the delegates to gain a thorough understanding in the safe use of cable avoidance tools to enable them to locate cables and pipes safely.

- Relevant sections of HSG47 - Component parts of a Cat - What can be detected with the modes available - Reviewing site plans - Passive searching – practical use - Component parts of the Genny - Detecting services with different Genny modes - Matching Cat & Genny frequencies - Active searching – practical use - Establishing depth, if the function is available - Why use locators - Benefits and limits of the CAT and Genny system.
Requirements:
Facilities: Room that is conducive to learning – with tables, white board
Materials: None required
Equipment:
- 1 Cat per pair - 1 Genny per 4 - Consider different models to broaden the training to a range of equipment
Critical factors: For success:
- Delegates briefed on the purpose of training beforehand - Ensuring that all the requirements are readily available
Common vulnerabilities to avoid: Insufficient equipment & flat batteries
Achievement: Evaluation: Practical assessment & a question paper
