CITB courses in their traditional, classroom-based format have been around for nearly 60 years, evolving over the years to become the suite of Site Safety Plus options we know today. Over time, there have been many updates and changes to the way CITB courses have worked, from their content to their delivery; in 2020 we saw perhaps one of the biggest – the introduction of online CITB training courses.
Developed in response to the Coronavirus pandemic which began in 2020, the online suite of CITB courses closely mirror the original, classroom-based range. Certain courses, such as the Tunnelling Safely Training Scheme (TSTS) are not available in an e-learning format (as the course content is largely practical and has to be demonstrated as part of the requisites to a pass), but the majority of courses are now available for both online and face-to-face learners. Originally planned to be a temporary solution to the social distancing situation, the online suite of courses has since been confirmed to be a permanent addition to the CITB line up.
Some delegates, who are perhaps steeped in experience of learning in a classroom, may not want to move to an online-only training experience, but for those who don’t mind e-learning, this addition to the CITB range has been a welcome one. Not only do they offer increased flexibility for those who may not have blocks of time to dedicate to training, they also open up training opportunities for individuals who may struggle with the travel required for classroom-based courses.
As above, increased flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of studying a CITB course (or indeed, any course) online.
· Less travelling. The cost-of-living crisis and other global situations have meant the that cost of fuelling a vehicle has increased a fair amount. Being able to learn online can help to keep travel costs down. In addition, being able to learn from a home or work location can make training more accessible for people who may not have access to their own vehicle.
· Social distancing – whilst this is no longer a legal requirement, some people still prefer to keep a safe distance from others to reduce the risk of catching any illnesses. Online learning allows this to happen.
· Applicable skills – depending on the course in question, delegates may be able to use the skills they’ve learnt very quickly, even if they haven’t completed all the course content. This is different to completing a block of classroom based training and then returning to work.
At present, there are a range of courses under the Site Safety Plus umbrella available online; a couple are free of charge and can be accessed through the CITB website directly. Others, such as the SMSTS or SSSTS online courses, are subject to fees depending on which courses are being undertaken.
As it stands, in 2023, we offer bookings for the following CITB online training options:
