The Benefits of IOSH Training

IOSH training is recognised in the UK and throughout the world as being of a specific standard, as the courses available are accredited by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). IOSH is the leading body for health and safety specialists in Europe; an independent organisation which provides guidance on different health and safety issues.

High quality IOSH training courses lead to IOSH qualifications that are respected in the UK and abroad. It is believed that as many as 120,000 people take these training courses every year thanks to the numerous benefits that they offer.

Trainers have to pass IOSH’s strict accreditation process to able to deliver the course. This means that IOSH training is an excellent choice for candidates hoping to improve their standing or credibility in their current role or looking to progress in the near future.

Level relevant

IOSH training courses are available with level or position relevant options, of which each course lasts a different amount of time. Each course duration is designed to reflect the depth of the course and means that that whatever stage in your career you are at, there will be an IOSH course suitable for you.

For example:

- The one-day IOSH Directing Safely course - aimed at persons in higher positions of responsibility. It includes information about UK health and safety legislation, who is responsible for what and to whom, how to keep to the regulations and fines that are associated with this, if you do not. This may also be known as the IOSH Safety for Senior Executives course

- The four/five-day IOSH Managing Safely course – aimed at managers who have to organise, monitor and control staff on a daily basis.

- The one-day IOSH Working Safely course - suitable for those that need a general health and safety introduction and to be aware of health and safety practices for their own and their peers’ safety

Industry specific

IOSH courses are available in two main types; General and Specialised.

General courses include the Working, Managing or Directing Safely courses. These are not linked to a specific field or profession and are suitable for all working environments such as offices and care homes.

Specialised IOSH courses are focused around specific, usually higher risk industries or particular issues of concern. These include Construction courses, Construction Design Management (CDM) courses and Environmental safety and protection offered at different levels. Examples of specialised IOSH courses include the include Directing Safely in the Waste Management Industry course and Managing Environmental Responsibilities.

Each course is designed to deal with the more precise aspects of these particular fields. For example, the IOSH Managing Environmental Responsibilities course includes four days of study covering: environmental law and responsibility and how this is enforced, key environmental concerns, forms of pollution and how to minimise these, managing waste with care, contamination, environmental management and audit systems.

Recertification Courses

Although IOSH certificates are valid for life, some IOSH trainers offer one day refresher courses for candidates who wish to update their knowledge on recent legislation changes.
