Occupational Safety Consultants Register (OSCR)
The Occupational Safety Consultants Register (OSCR) went live in January 2011 as a first step in the process of resolving problems between health and safety consultants and businesses – the idea being that this register would list only consultants qualified by HSE and as such businesses could consult this register and choose a consultant who has complied with the high standards set by HSE for inclusion. The Register is available only for individuals to register. The website underwent revision in 2015 to offer users an improved search option.
Why was the OSCR created?
The Common Sense Common Safety report by Lord Young of Graffham was published in October 2010 as part of a Whitehall-wide review of UK health and safety laws. This report, in part, recommended the creation of an online, national register of occupational safety consultants who would meet criteria set out by HSE, for use by businesses who needed to use a consultant. This register would also give high quality, proportionate advice to businesses to help them decide which type of consultant would be most suitable for the needs in hand.
How has the OSCR improved Health & Safety for Businesses?
Giving businesses the option to work with a registered Health & Safety consultant means that they have peace of mind the person they choose to work with has met the guidelines & qualifications set out by HSE for inclusion. In addition, this also gives businesses freedom of choice to shortlist many consultants if they choose, knowing they will all have met the HSE guidelines. As a result, risks will be managed, and the health and safety of employees will be more secure.
All those who are registered on the website are chartered members of IOSH, CIEH or REHIS or a fellow of IIRSM.
In addition, the OSCR website contains a full Knowledge Base for business owners, which acts as a guide through general health and safety, risks, and protecting against risks. This Knowledge Base is free to access for all.
The website allows users to search via location, industry, topic or a custom phrase/keyword, and gives free access to each registered consultant’s profile.
