What are ITSSAR and CPCS?
• ITSSAR is an independent training standards scheme and register, monitoring training standards for all Mechanical Handling Equipment. It is not specific to the construction industry but covers a wide range of industrial sectors. This can include construction, warehousing and manufacturing.
• CPCS is a scheme specifically designed for the construction and allied industries and focuses specifically on plant machinery operation. It is owned and managed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in the United Kingdom.
While ITSSAR is recognised and accepted in various industries, its recognition may vary depending on the specific requirements of employers or projects. CPCS is widely recognised in the UK construction industry - many construction sites and employers do prefer or require CPCS certification for plant operators.
Training and Assessment
• ITSSAR training and assessment may vary depending on the training provider, as long as they meet ITSSAR standards.
• CPCS training and assessment routes are standardised and follow a specific curriculum set by CITB.
From this, the route you decide to pursue will depend largely on the industry you work in, or wish to move in to. If you are in the Construction sector, then following the CPCS route of certification to work with plant machinery is most likely the most targeted course, as you can start at Foundation/Novice level (resulting in the Red Trained Operator Card) if necessary and work towards the Competent Operator Blue Card.
If you work in a different sector but still need to use MHE such as forklifts or pallet trucks, then ITSSAR training is a more viable option, not least because it can be more cost effective (although can also take more time).
For more information on the CPCS courses we have available, ranging from A02 (Crawler Crane) to A77 (Telescopic Handler 360 Slew), please see our website.
